Christchurch mosque shooter condemned to life detainment without parole

The shooter who killed 51 individuals at two mosques in New Zealand’s Christchurch city in 2019 was condemned to life in jail without any chance to appeal, a court reported on Thursday.

The decision, which is the first of its sort in New Zealand, came following three days of the final hearing of the case at the High Court in Christchurch, reports Xinhua news agency.

On March 15, 2019, the 29-year-old Australian shooter, Brenton Harrison Tarrant, executed 51 individuals and harmed 40 others, mostly worshippers in Christchurch.

He was condemned on 51 homicide charges, 40 endeavored murder charges, and one terrorism charge.

The BBC quoted Judge Cameron Mander as he stated during the sentencing “Your crimes are so wicked that even if you are detained until you die, it will not exhaust the requirements of punishment.”

Justin Manders also said while imposing a life sentence without parole “If not here, then when.”

Tarrant said through a legal counselor in court that he didn’t restrict the arraignment’s application for an existence without the chance for further appeal sentence.

He had before likewise denied the right to speak at his condemning.

During this week’s sentencing, the court had heard that the shooter wanted to target another mosque yet was confined by officials in transit.

A total of 91 casualties or their families gave statements at the hearing that began on Monday.

The assault provoked New Zealand to change its firearm laws.
