Controversy Over Osmania Hospital Demolition

Following its decision to demolish Osmania Hospital, the Telangana government has been accused of deliberately assisting the demolition of Asaf Jahi dynasty symbols. Since stating plans to demolish Osmania Hospital in 2015, Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has been deliberately eliminating Asafia-era icons, according to rights campaigner Abdul Rawoof. The recent court affidavit confirming the government’s decision to demolish the historic hospital building has sparked questions about the city’s identity and legacy.

Lubna Sarwath and others have petitioned Telangana High Court Chief Justice Alok Aradhe, claiming that the government’s proposal to demolish a registered heritage property is unconstitutional and detrimental to the city’s character. They raised worries regarding the preservation of other historic structures such as Charminar Unani Hospital and Military Medical College Unani, citing prior attempts to demolish buildings like as Erram Manzil and Saifabad Palace.

The activists accuse the government of reducing water supplies from the Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar reservoirs, increasing water supply through other ways, and considering renaming KBR Park Asafia Park as part of an alleged effort to remove the Asaf Jahi dynasty’s traces. They underline that, according to the legislation, the government does not have the jurisdiction to decide whether or not to demolish listed cultural heritage monuments and should instead endeavor to preserve them.

The issue over the demolition of Osmania Hospital and the purported removal of Asafia-era emblems has ignited a debate in the state concerning the preservation of historical and cultural heritage. Preservation initiatives and conversations with relevant parties are critical to ensuring the state’s unique history and identity are preserved.
