Covid-19 Said to Be Endemic in Telangana Now

Recent reports indicate that Covid-19 has now become an endemic infection in Telangana and elsewhere in the country. Senior scientists and geneticists here said that due to its endemic status, there would be minor local surges, low levels of transmission, and minimal loss of life in the future.

It is possible for Omicron and its sub-variants to continue circulating in the community and even infect a pocket of vulnerable populations. According to public health experts, the number of infections, hospitalizations, and deaths will not be as high as during the first three waves of Covid.

Dr. Ch Mohan Rao, former director and distinguished scientist at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), suggests that Covid-19 is no longer a pandemic and has reached an endemic status.

The infections will be similar to common colds and coughs due to their endemic status. Though they may come and go, they will not disappear. There will always be a section of the population that gets it. Colds, coughs, and fever will be mild inconveniences caused by the disease, he said.

However, fresh COVID-19 cases are still being reported on a regular basis from various parts of the world, including India. In fact, the number of daily new COVID-19 cases in many countries is higher than what was reported at the peak of those countries’ national waves prior to the emergence of Omicron as a variant of concern. The severity of COVID-19 infections, on the other hand, is low, and the burden on health services due to intensive care units and hospital admission is even lesser.

COVID-19 vaccination coverage is increasing, and COVID-19-related restrictions have been removed or greatly relaxed in many countries.

In March and April of this year, India saw the lowest number of daily new COVID-19 cases since the third wave in January 2022. However, daily cases have risen to around 18,000 per day since then.
