Hyderabad: The Communist Party of India has expressed its profound grief at the passing away of comrade Somnath Chatterjee.
In a statement today, the CPI said though he hailed from a conservative family, Somnath Chatterjee was secular to the core since his early days till his last breath. He was one of the outstanding leaders of Indian Left and Communist movement. He was one of the best Parliamentarians and the first Communist to become Speaker of the Lok Sabha. It said Somnath Chatterjee could use parliamentary forum effectively to articulate the concerns of the people and the country. He upheld the parliamentary democratic practices and conventions in a multi-party democracy.
His demise is a great loss for the Indian Left and for the parliamentary democratic setup of the country. The CPI expressed its heartfelt condolences to the family members of Com Somnath Chatterjee. (NSS)
