Delhi HC Issues Notice On Sharjeel Imam’s Bail Plea Over Jamia Violence

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday gave notice on the bail application documented by JNU student Sharjeel Imam in a sedition case regarding the 2019 violence in Jamia Nagar in the national capital.

Court Will Hear Matter In February 

A bench of Justice Rajnish Bhatnagar gave notice to the prosecution and seeked a reply on the bail plea. The court will hear the matter further on February 11, 2022.

His adviser, Ahmad Ibrahim has challenged a previous trial in court request which had excused his bail application. The case identifies with FIR 242 enlisted at PS Crime Branch, New Friends Colony.

On October 22, a court here would not engage his request. While excusing the request, Saket Court Additional Sessions Judge Anuj Aggarwal had expressed that the tone and tenor of combustible discourse will generally have a weakening impact upon public tranquillity, harmony, and peace.

FIR States Timeline Of Events 

According to the prosecution , “On December 15, 2019, at around 11.15 a.m., information with respect to an exhibit against the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) by the students and residents of Jamia Nagar was obtained at the concerned police headquarters. It was accounted for that the students would walk towards Parliament.

“At around 2.20 p.m., a huge social affair of around 2,500 individuals equipped with lathis gathered close to Escort Hospital, Sarai Julena Chowk. At around 3.22 p.m., regardless of the notice, the crowd of around 3,000 to 3,500 individuals began progressing towards Sarai Julena Village and Sujan Mahindra Road. At the point when the horde attempted to cross the blockades put by the police at Surya Hotel for walking towards Parliament, they were halted from walking ahead,” the FIR read.

In any event, three DTC transports were set on fire in the Bharat Nagar area of the city on December 15, 2019, after the exhibit against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) turned brutal nearby.

Different bodies of evidence have been enlisted against Sharjeel Imam, a JNU researcher and lobbyist, remembering affirmed fiery discourses at Jamia Millia Islamia for December 13, 2019, and at Aligarh Muslim University on December 16, 2019. He has been in legal care since January 2020.
