‘Discover Masjid’ initiative opens door at Azizia mosque in Hyderabad

Perhaps many have wondered what inside a mosque looks like, but have never had the opportunity to visit one. In the light of the slowdown of the pandemic, the Masjid-e-Azizia at Humayun Nagar in Mehdipatnam will remain open to people of all faiths for guided tours on Sunday morning. Both men and women can visit the mosque between 11 am and 1.30 pm.

Under the visit-my-mosque initiative launched 4 years ago by the Muslim elite of Hyderabad, this mosque is the fourth one that has opened its doors to non-Muslims.

Hyderabad has been renowned for its Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb for almost five centuries since it was founded, and the organizers hope that their initiative will strengthen bridges of understanding between people of all religious communities.

The program leader for the ‘Visit the Masjid and discover it’ program, Mateen Ahmed, told STOI that people do not know how a mosque looks from the inside, so this Sunday’s program will enable them to gain a better understanding of their place of worship and remove any misconceptions.

A pioneering initiative to create communal harmony has been undermined by the pandemic, said educationist Dr Zakir Hussain. Discover-the-masjid is taking place at this mosque, the fourth in the program. In the three previous initiatives, many non-Muslims visited mosques and clarified their doubts,” he said, adding that it is a spiritual and friendly experience that is unique.

An Eid Milap event will also take place at the mosque on Sunday, according to the organizers. Women will also be allowed to attend the event.

The main purpose of the project is to strengthen your mutual relationships with your neighbours in the city. It will also enable you to better understand, respect, and tolerate one another,” the organizers stated.
