EU Releases “Strategic Compass”, Defence Strategy Against Migrant Crisis at Polish-Belarus Border

The current migration situation at the EU borders has turned out to be a much bigger concern than earlier anticipated. The new strategy for defending European trade unions, called the strategic compass, is designed to prepare the block for response to situations, such as the current migration crisis at the border of the EU-white-Belarus, the UE Top Diplomat said.

“Not Just Another Policy Document”

Addressing a press conference to a meeting of EU defense ministers, the high representative of EUS for foreign and security policies, Josep Borrell, said the document was “not just another policy document” but a guide for action with Concrete measures and timelines, Xinhua news agency reported.

We must respond to all the possible tools at our disposal, “Borrell said when a proposal was developed to establish a hybrid toolbox, which” would be extremely relevant to address these types of situations (relative to Belarus). “

“The world is full of hybrid situations where we experience intermediate dynamics of competition, intimidation and coercion, and what we see today on the Polish and Lithuanian border with Belarus, is a typical example,” he said.

He explained that the distinction between war and peace had decreased over time.
Borrell said he proposed the Member States create a quick response power of 5,000 people to solve operational problems.  The proposal to create the quick response power will be included in the final draft of the program, which will be approved in March 2022 at EU summit.

On Tuesday, the press conference had the first opportunity in which Borrell revealed in public about the Strategic Compass.

Clashes Occur At Polish-Belarus Border

This comes after earlier on Tuesday, a clash occurred between a refugee stranded on the Polish-Belarus border and the Polish border guard.

According to the Polish Ministry of Defense (MOD), refugees at the Kuźnica border crossing on their way to Poland threw stones at Polish guards who responded with water cannons and tear gas.

The mod states: “Immigrants attacked our soldiers and guards with stones and tried to get the fence to reach Polish territory.

“Our army used tear gas to stop migrant attacks.”

Marta Szymanderska of Grupa Granica, a coalition of NGOs responding to the humanitarian crisis at the border, told Al Jazeera: The Polish army is not only illegal, but also inhumane. “
