Founder of Hyderabad startup becomes 1st Indian to receive UN recognition

Ramkrishna Mukkavilli invented a technology that could assist humanity in overcoming the problem of water scarcity by developing a system that could produce water from the air. His company, Maithri Aquatech, has created over 100 million litres of fresh water from the air using atmospheric water generating technology.

Ramkrishna now adds another accomplishment to his belt. The Hyderabad-based company founder is the first Indian to be named a Global Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) pioneer for water stewardship by the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC).

He was earlier named India’s SDG Pioneer by the UN Global Compact Network India, and he is now one of the ten new SDG Pioneers for 2022.

Mukkavilli’s work in promoting water security through nature-based water solutions in India and 27 other countries contributed to his selection. Meghdoot, the company’s solution, is an alternative water idea that turns air into water.

Domestic consumers in water-stressed areas, top Fortune 500 firms, huge public-sector companies, hospitals, schools, and underserved regions all benefit from the technology. It has prevented the use of an estimated 200 million litres of vital groundwater resources.

“Recognitions like this undoubtedly demonstrate the necessity of sustainable water solutions like Meghdoot in the current global climate and the severity of the worldwide water situation. This recognition will strengthen my efforts to alleviate the global water situation, and I urge others to do the same,” Mukkavilli added.

The UNGC named ten new SDG Pioneers — business leaders who are undertaking extraordinary work to achieve the SDGs by implementing the UN Global Compact Ten Principles on human rights, the environment, labour, and anti-corruption.

The global search focused on professionals at any level in a company that participated in the UN Global Compact, with winners chosen from every continent.
