Fuel price hike sparks Twitter war between KTR and Hardeep Singh Puri

A Twitter war broke out between minister Hardeep Singh Puri and KT Rama Rao amid the continued criticism by the TRS-led Telangana government of the BJP.

Hardeep Singh Puri sounded a bit sarcastic on social media, which triggered a war of words. A tweet he posted questioned the high price of fuel in Telangana.

He tweeted: The curious case of Telangana. Imposed one of the highest VAT on Petrol & diesel – 35.20% on petrol & 27% on diesel. State Government has collected Rs 56,020 crore as VAT from 2014 to 2021. Projected to mop up Rs.13,315 crore in 2021-22. Adds up to a large Rs.69,334 crore. Where has it gone?

The Telangana government has not increased VAT on petrol products since the formation of Telangana, KTR responded. He said: Puri Ji, You can’t run with the hares & hunt with the hounds. Cost of barrel of crude oil back in 2014 & in April 2022 is almost the same $105. But cost of Petrol in 2014 was Rs.70 & now it is at Rs.120. NO increase in VAT in Telangana. So where did the increase come from?

He held the union government itself responsible for the sharp rise in fuel prices.

When the price of crude oil was $105 in 2014, the price of petrol was Rs 70, according to the Telangana minister. Now that crude oil is available for the same price, petrol costs Rs 120.

The Centre should abolish the cess altogether and provide significant relief to consumers, he urged.

In addition, he said that Telangana had not received 41% of our rightful share due to your government’s cess.

You are looting 11.4% from the state through cess and we are getting only 29.6% for FY23. The least someone learned you can do is to stop engaging in subterfuge for political purposes, he further said.
