Get ready for another celestial event in April

The year’s first major celestial event is approaching! This one is oddly different because it is a solar eclipse with a difference.

A rare and quite odd celestial event in the form of a hybrid solar eclipse is set to occur in the last week of April.

According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) annual eclipse data, the hybrid solar eclipse will occur on April 20 and will be visible over South East Asian countries, including parts of India, and extending up to Australia.

While a total solar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Moon, and Earth are all in the same direct line, a rare hybrid solar eclipse appears as an annular eclipse in some places because the Moon is positioned between the Sun and the Earth. Since the Moon’s shadow moves across the Earth’s surface, the eclipse will be visible as a total eclipse in some places.

Simply put, in a hybrid solar eclipse, some locations of the Earth will witness a total eclipse, while the other regions will see an annular eclipse.  The hybrid solar eclipse is a once-in-a-decade celestial event. A similar eclipse occurred in 2013, and the next one after April will be in November 2031.

According to NASA eclipse data, the hybrid solar eclipse’s path begins in the southern Indian Ocean and extends all the way to Australia. Amateur astronomers in Hyderabad stated the hybrid solar eclipse may be visible in several parts of the country depending on local weather conditions.

As indicated by Sky and Telescope, a US-based monthly amateur astronomy magazine, there will be four eclipses this year.  Aside from the hybrid eclipse on April 20, there will be three more: a lunar eclipse in May, and the annular and partial solar eclipse in October.
