GHMC Mayor directs officials to send out more dog-catching vehicles

GHMC Mayor G Vijaya Laxmi directed authorities on Saturday that 10 more dog-catching vehicles be dispatched to add to the city’s current fleet of 50 in order to eliminate dog bites and the stray dog problem.

In the GHMC, there are 30 circles, and two vehicles will be deployed in each circle.

The Mayor also authorised the appointment of Sanitary Field Assistants (SFAs) to clean trash from hotels and other eateries in their respective jurisdictions, as well as proposed that the Veterinary, Sanitation, and Health wings collaborate and implement collaborative actions to eliminate the stray dog scourge.

The instructions were issued on Saturday, following a meeting with the committee formed to address the dog threat, according to a press release.

The group is made up of eight corporators from various political parties, and on Saturday, its members presented 26 recommendations based on field reports from their individual districts.

Among the proposals were increasing the number of sterilisations from 300 to 400 per day, hiring 31 additional veterinarians on an outsourced basis, and increasing the number of dog-catching trucks.

Meat and chicken shops, hotels, restaurants, function halls, and other establishments are now under the GHMC’s radar, as the corporation will take stringent action against such establishments if waste and leftovers, including non-veg, are discarded on streets and public places.

To avoid the gathering of street dogs in search of food, the GHMC will ensure proper disposal practises. This decision was made in response to recent dog attacks in the city.

It has been observed that meat shop owners throw their waste on roads and corners, causing dogs to congregate in order to consume the waste of meat and chicken.

Shaik Sohail a septuagenarian said, “Animal behavior is said to be changed when they eat raw meat. And it is observed that most of the shop owners feed the waste to the dogs and by eating raw non-veg their behavior changes leading to attack on humans, especially kids,” he added.
