GHMC To Introduce Electric Vehicles For Garbage Disposal

After the recent announcement by MA&UD Minister K.T. Rama Rao that electric vehicles must be introduced to replace the diesel-trucks presently used for garbage collection in GHMC, the corporation has ordered supply of electric autos from Hyderabad-based Gayam Motor Works (GMW).

Each diesel auto to be replaced will reduce about 35 tons of carbon emissions over five years. Around 20 lakh tons of carbon emissions can be reduced by replacing existing municipal disposal vehicles with electric vehicles within GHMC limits. While the running cost of a diesel vehicle is Rs 3/km, the running cost of GMW’s electric auto is as low as Rs 0.50/km. The maintenance cost of an electric auto is also very minimal as there are fewer moving parts.

“The fleet of electric vehicles communicates real-time status. GHMC’s waste management system can now be monitored from a single location by our officials. This will improve per vehicle productivity, reduce non-compliance, eliminate manual tracking for monitoring and escalation. Communities benefit from optimized operations, beautified public spaces and reduced carbon footprint”, said GHMC Commissioner Dr B Janardhan Reddy.
