Girl students ask to remove Hijab before exam in Bihar, triggered outrage

Targeting Muslim girls wearing hijab in educational institutions in order to keep them off from pursuing education became a new normal in parts of the country and a fresh incident has been reported from Muzaffarpur area in Bihar. The incident took place at Mahant Darshan Das Mahilavidyalaya (MDDM) College that sparked an outrage among local Muslims who turned up in a big number to register their protest against the college management.

According to reports, a male teacher in the college asked the girl students to remove Hijab when they appeared to write an exam. Accusing the students of hiding bluetooth under the hijab to perform cheating, the teacher reportedly said ‘You people always hide behind your religion to carry out an offence.’ “You eat here in India and always beat the drums of neighbouring Pakistan,” the professor reportedly said.

Offended by the dictate of a Professor Ravi Bhushan, the girls students refused to remove the veil. However, enraged over the students’ protest, the professor allegedly calls them traitors and asks them to go to Pakistan.

Though the girl students show willingness to remove the hijab to prove their innocence, but want to do so before a female teacher instead of a male person. “We were ready to remove the hijab to prove that we haven’t carried any gadget inside the veil but it should be done before a female member and not the Male one. However, the professor not just insisted on removing Hijab but wanted us to do it there and then before him,” said a protesting girl.

Meanwhile, the parents too flock to the college and hold a protest against the dictate of the professor and the college management. According to protesting students, the professor called them traitors and even told them to go to Pakistan. Upon receiving the information, the police from Mithanpura Thana reached the spot and took control over the situation by pacifying the protestors.

Later, sensing trouble the professor maintained that he wasn’t mean to offend the students and his intention behind asking to remove Hijab is to maintain transparency during the examination, however, the girl students took it wrong and started protesting.

Instead of going for a thorough enquiry into the matter, the College Principal Dr.Kannu Priya reportedly said “The whole incident is an orchestrated ploy to disturb the peaceful situation. The girl students were asked to remove mobile phones and bluetooth before the exam to maintain transparency but they took it wrong and tried to give it a communal colour.”

Meanwhile, reacting over the incident the Mithanpura Thana Incharge Shrikant Prasad Sinha said, “An incident involving provocation over Hijab came to their notice but it was almost settled down and the situation is fully under control.”
