Govt. planned setting up 31 new STPs to deal with sewage issue

To address the most contentious issue of lack of sewerage lines in several parts of the city, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) has come up with a proposal of setting up 31 new sewerage treatment plants in Hyderabad claiming that this initiative will surely resolve the matter for once and for all.

While addressing a Press Conference at Marri Chennareddy Human Development Center here in the City, the Minister for Municipal administration and Urban Development K.Taraka Rama Rao, said, “A total 31 new sewerage treatment plants will be set up in Hyderabad with a fund to the tune of 3,866.21 crore to treat the sewage at various locations.”

Presently, he said, there are 25 sewerage treatment plants in the city with a treatment capacity of 772 Million Liter per day (MLD). Hyderabad city currently generates 1950 MLD (million liters per day) of sewage of which 1650 MLD is being generated within GHMC limits while another 300 MLD is formed within GHMC and ORR jurisdiction. “With the existing 25 STPs in the city, only 46.78 per cent of the total wastewater is being treated,” he explained.

“Over the past seven years a number of initiatives have been taken to address sewerage issue” he minister said, adding that “The Chief Minister K.Chandrasekhar Rao has set a target of 100 per cent sewage treatment as he wanted the condition of the Lakes in the city especially the Hussain Sagar Lake should be improved and the Musi River should be cleaned at any cost.”
