Govt schools in Telangana given new lease of life through ‘Mana Ooru-Mana Badi’

Many would assume it is a corporate or international school based on the brand new furniture, which includes dual desks for students, swanky classrooms with pictorial paintings, a dining hall, and so on. However, it is the Government Model Primary School Aliya, Hyderabad that has been transformed as part of the ‘Mana Ooru-Mana Badi/Mana Basti-Mana Badi’ program.

The ‘Mana Ooru-Mana Badi’ program, the State government’s flagship initiative for comprehensive development and strengthening infrastructure in government schools, was formally launched this year at ZP High School (Boys) in Wanaparthy by Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao. The program has infused a new lease of life into government schools.

As part of the initiative, a total of 26,072 government and local body schools are getting a major facelift in phases over the course of 12 months. Toilets with running water, electrification, drinking water supply, furniture, painting of entire schools, green chalkboard, compound walls, kitchen sheds, new classrooms to replace dilapidated ones, dining halls in high schools, and implementation of digital education are among the components.

The State government has begun work in 9,123 schools in this first phase of the program at a cost of Rs 3,497.62 crore. Work in 97.8 percent of these schools has received administrative sanctions, and work in 82.41 percent of the schools has already been grounded.

Apart from improving school infrastructure, the School Education Department has introduced app-based geo-attendance for both teaching and non-teaching staff in government and local body schools, replacing the age-old practice of marking attendance in registers.

Government colleges

In addition to the 405 existing government junior colleges, the State government established one Government Vocational Junior College and one Government Junior College in Qutbullapur and Meerpet. These colleges had received huge responses for admission.

The State government also approved the establishment of the Government Model Residential Polytechnic College at Manuguru in the Bhadradri Kothagudem district. A preliminary administrative approval was also issued this year to establish a new Government Degree College in Makthal, Narayanpet district.

Universities

This year, Telangana had its first Women’s University, with the government upgrading Osmania University College for Women into Telangana Mahila Viswavidyalayam (Women’s University).

This academic year, Osmania University made significant changes to the credit system in PG courses, reducing the number of credits from 96 to 80. The University has also approved the Professor of Practice concept, which will allow colleges to hire industry experts as faculty members. A new girls’ hostel has opened at Nizam College, and the University has laid the foundation for a 500-person men’s hostel at a cost of Rs 39.50 crore this year.
