Govt to build 200 check dams: Tummala

Hyderabad: The Government plans to construct about 200 check dams near 532 bridges under construction or renovation in the state, according to Roads and Buildings Minister Tummala Nageshwar Rao. At an estimated cost of Rs 2782 crore the government has taken up strengthening or reconstructing the 532 bridges across the state, he said.

Rao said that as per Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s directive, an official team after a visit to Maharashtra, approved that 200 check dams with design and structure can be built near these bridges based on water availability, he said. The minister further said that about 12 per cent to 15 per cent extra funds are required and not more than that for the purpose. The roads and buildings department has taken up the task of constructing 14000 km highways in the state at a cost of Rs 18000 cr, the minister said. He also said that the related works are going on at a fast pace and will pave way from districts to mandals and from mandals to villages with two-lane and four lane roads. Also the government will take up 200 check dams construction to protect water bodies, increase ground water table and provide waters to animals and birds. He also said that the check dams to be built in a phased manner will protect environment from pollution.(NSS)
