Groundwater Levels Drop Drastically in Western Hyderabad

Groundwater levels in western Hyderabad, encompassing Quthbullapur, Kukatpally, and Malkajgiri mandals of Medchal\Malkajgiri district, witnessed a significant decline in March. These areas experienced a plunge of more than 20 meters below ground level (MGBL).

Simultaneously, within just one month, from February to March 2024, the groundwater levels in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area up to the Outer Ring Road (ORR) decreased substantially to 1.20 meters.

To monitor this concerning trend, the Groundwater Department deployed monitoring stations known as Piezometers across 46 mandals in the GHMC area. Officials expressed deep concern as certain areas surpassed the critical threshold of 20 MGBL, indicating an alarming water shortage.

Notably, locations like Kukatpally village (27.53 MGBL), Malkajgiri (24.47 MGBL), Jeedimetla (20.90 MGBL), and SR Nagar (20.50 MGBL) recorded depths exceeding this critical mark.

The situation has raised serious alarm bells among officials, given the crucial importance of groundwater for sustaining daily life and agricultural activities in the region. The average depth of water levels in the GHMC area up to ORR has exhibited a worrying trend, escalating from 9.68 meters in March 2023 to 10.89 meters in March 2024. Such fluctuations underline the pressing need for concerted efforts to manage and conserve water resources effectively.

Variations in groundwater levels across the GHMC area were stark, with measurements ranging from 1.73 meters at Kistareddypet village, Ameenpur mandal, Sangareddy district, to a concerning 27.53 meters at Kukatpally village and mandal, Medchal Malkajgiri district. These disparities underscore the localized nature of the water crisis and the urgent need for targeted interventions to address it.
