Haleem hopping becomes a popular trend in Hyderabad this Ramzan

Restaurant hopping and bar hopping are popular, but Hyderabadis are now into the haleem hopping trend, which has become popular in the city this Ramzan.

The trend is to try out different restaurants and vendors’ versions of haleem with friends or family. People form groups to embark on a food adventure, which has grown in popularity over the years. Haleem hopping has become a tradition for foodies every year.

“I go haleem hopping with my cousins. Starting from Charminar, we go to almost all the famous spots in the city. We buy one or two haleems from every joint and share it amongst ourselves,” Kaushik, a regular haleem hopper, says.

Haleem hopping has, in some ways, become a way to explore and discover the culinary heritage of Hyderabad.

Traditionally, Haleem has been associated with Ramzan as well as Hyderabad. The art of cooking of Haleem is considered unique. A paste-like consistency is achieved by cooking the dish for nearly eight hours. You can tell how popular Haleem is by seeing the crowd eating it after they break their fasts in Hyderabad.

Throughout this month, Haleem is the most often heard word in the city and it also becomes a special delicacy that almost everyone in the city will crave.

Many restaurants in the city set up Haleem outlets during the holy month. Many city people rely on it as a source of employment in addition to being a business.

As a result, Ramzan has become synonymous with the meal. The Indian GIS registry office granted it Geographical Indication status (GIS) in 2010 in acknowledgment of its cultural importance and popularity, making it the country’s first non-vegetarian dish to do so.

Although it is easily available during the holy month, some stores made it available throughout the year.
