Horticulture shaping the world’s future economy: Governor

Explaining that the agricultural revolution especially in the field of horticulture is shaping the world as it holds a more thriving economic prosperity even in the future, Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan said, “Fruits, vegetables and flowers are part of the Indian culture and an intense research on medicinal plants is a need of the hour to explore more in the field of horticulture.”

She was addressing the 2nd Convocation of Sri Konda Laxman Telangana State Horticultural University (SKLTSHU) on Friday at the main campus in Mulugu, Siddipet. She was delighted over the way the students are selecting the field of agriculture, especially the horticultural courses so as to build their future and serve the nation and said, “Vegetables and fruits are important components in a balanced diet. Hence Horticultural University has a crucial role in enhancing production and productivity of fruits, vegetables and flowers in shaping the future economy.”

“The importance and awareness of fruits and vegetables is learnt during the COVID time. Apart from this a formative lesson was also learned about balanced nutrition and horticulture graduates are crucial in creating beautiful orchards,” she explained.

Dr. Anand Kumar Singh, Deputy Director General (Horticulture Sciences), Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) was the Chief Guest of the second convocation.

While addressing the gathering he said, “Amid the challenges posed by climate change, science and technology plays a crucial role in increasing the production, productivity and quality of agricultural crops including the horticulture produce.”

Vice Chancellor Dr. B.Neeraj Prabhakar shed a light over the university’s progress in the field of horticulture education, research and extension. Within the shortest possible time, the University from its inception has registered significant achievements in education, research and extension. University has more plans to conduct research on crops and technology to reap net profits to the horticulture farmers in the state,” she said.

On this occasion, Pallerla Saisupriya was honoured with three Gold medals. A student of 2020 batch Pallerla Sai Supriya, completed Master of Science in Horticulture with a Highest Overall Grade Point Average among all the disciplines. Apart from this, a total number of 575 degrees were awarded that include 482 under graduate, 76 post graduate and 17 Ph.Ds besides 11 gold medals.
