Hungary Extends Vaccination Campaign As Covid Cases Surge

Amidst the Omicron variant spreading across the world, the Hungarian government will roll out a vaccination campaign across the country in the next six weeks, Prime Minister Viktor Orban has said.

“In the next month and a half, we will have vaccination action days in all localities of the country,” Orban said in an interview.

“I expect the number of those taking the booster shot to skyrocket,” he added.

Vaccination Campaign Extended

As per the announcement, the six week vaccination drive comes amidst a special vaccination week held between November 22 and November 28. But it has been extended to December 5.

In the past two weeks, one million shots had been administered across the country. Out of these, 800,000 are booster doses and 115,000 are the first doses of vaccines.

Orban further explained that the government is doing really well with the booster shots. A total of 2.6 million have taken the booster doses which is 27 percent of the population. He said that as the effectiveness of the first and the second dose declines after six months, the government plans to contact everyone via email, text message or letter before the protection expires and urge them to take the booster dose.

Soon after Orban’s interview, Hungary’s Constitutional Court said in a ruling that it was not unconstitutional to oblige the healthcare workers to get vaccinated. The government has already made vaccination mandatory for healthcare workers several times this year.

The court further said that the employment who refuse to get vaccinated should be terminated and won’t be entitled to dismissal time or severance pay.

Hungary Reports Increase In Cases

On Friday, Hungary reported 10,143 fresh Covid 19 cases within 24 hours span. The Covid 19 tally now stands at 1,134,869. In the past 24 hours, a total of 191 people have died from the disease which has taken the death toll to 35,122. Currently, a total of 7463 patients are being treated in hospitals. Out of these 566 patients are on ventilators.
