Hyderabad: 14 people involved in cyber fraud arrested by police

Several cyber fraud cases were investigated by the Hyderabad city police and 14 individuals were taken into custody on Tuesday.

11 people were arrested in the first case, including four women, for allegedly defrauding people on the pretext of redeeming reward points on a bank’s credit card. Using the pretext of redeeming reward points, gang members called victims and claimed to be from the SBI head office.

As soon as the victims revealed their card details, the suspects made PoS transactions using OTPs. A call center was set up at Noida to conduct the criminal activities, said Hyderabad Joint Commissioner of Police (Detective Department) Gajarao Bhupal, adding the gang was involved in 18 cases in Telangana and over 100 cases throughout the country.

Another case involved two individuals who posed as senior government officials to cheat people. The accused, Raghav Appu from Bengaluru and Anand Kumar from Bihar, used pictures of government officials as WhatsApp display pictures.

They sent messages to a few government officials, public officials, and others urging them to transfer money immediately to a Google Pay number, police said, adding that they also sent links to recharge Amazon Gift cards.

As soon as the victim recharges, the fraudsters sell it online at a 30 percent discount, according to police.

Across the country, there has been an increase in cases of fraudsters impersonating senior government officials and sending out Whatsapp messages requesting immediate assistance.

Because the display photos are of senior officials, their juniors have little reason to suspect anything is wrong.

In the third case, a Bihar native was apprehended for defrauding a woman of Rs.39 lakh. Rakesh Kumar, 27, called a woman and claimed she had won a Rs.25 lakh lottery. Under the guise of assisting her in claiming the prize money, he duped her of Rs.39 lakh, officials said.
