Hyderabad Accounts for Half of Dengue Cases in Telangana

Hyderabad accounted for half of the 2,972 dengue cases In August 2023, reported in Telangana. Dr. KK Durga Prasad, Senior Consultant Paediatrician, highlighted the challenges posed by dengue, explaining that the disease spreads through the bite of infected female Aedes mosquitoes.

Dengue is most commonly observed during the monsoon season when rainwater accumulates in potholes, serving as a breeding ground for these mosquitoes. Stagnant water in household items like buckets, containers, coolers, refrigerators, and balconies can also facilitate mosquito breeding.

Dr. Prasad emphasized the alarming increase in dengue cases, which jumped from 164 to 1,171 in just one month. He pointed out that late mosquito breeding complicates vector control efforts. Over the years, the dengue virus has evolved, with DENV2 becoming the dominant strain after 2012, and more recently, DENV4 gaining prominence in South India.
