Hyderabad Airport begins digital passenger processing as part of DigiYatra program

On August 18, the Hyderabad airport will roll out a proof-of-concept for digital passenger processing as part of the Centre’s DigiYatra program.

Passengers will be automatically processed based on facial recognition at select checkpoints, such as Departure Domestic Entry Gate 3 and the Security Hold Area (SHA).

An exclusive mobile app for enrollment has been developed by DigiYatra’s technical team. DigiYatra’s services can be accessed through the app that passengers can download. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the app on August 15.

There is currently a beta version of the DigiYatra app available on the Playstore (for Android). In the near future, the same app will be available on the App Store for iOS devices.

CEO-GHIAL Pradeep Panicker discussed the DigiYatra initiative by saying, The Digiyatra initiative aims to provide airline travelers with a hassle-free, digitally unified air travel experience across all stages. The Government of India selected us as one of the airports to conduct a proof of concept for Digi Yatra, marking a milestone in Indian aviation.

At an earlier stage, GHIAL had conducted face recognition trials, which were widely acclaimed across the airport ecosystem. With this technology, passengers can travel paperless and use a face scan as a boarding pass, he said.

An authenticated face photograph is associated with the passenger’s face through the Digilocker portal. Passengers will then be able to associate their DigiYatra IDs with their current or future flight bookings or boarding passes.

Digi Yatra allows seamless navigation through the airport using digital guidance systems, as well as real-time notifications about congestion and delays so that passengers are always informed of the next step of their journey. A digital booking system will also be available for in-flight services and destination-based offerings.

There will also be enhanced security at Indian airports using “DigiYatra ID” with real-time biometrics.
