Hyderabad Airport to install facial recognition system

A phased implementation of the Facial Recognition System (FRS) will take place in seven Indian airports, including Hyderabad, as part of the government’s Digi Yatra program by March 2023.

The first phase will be implemented at the airports in Kolkata, Varanasi, Pune, Vijayawada, Bangalore, Delhi, and Hyderabad. This program is designed in such a way that it offers passengers a seamless and stress-free airport travel experience, according to the civil aviation ministry.

In a statement to the Lower House, the Minister of State for Civil Aviation, General VK Singh (retd), stated, “Digi Yatra is aligned with the global processes of the International Air Travel Association (IATA) pass for seamless international travel.”

In Parliament on Thursday, the minister announced the completion of Digi Yatra biometric boarding system tests at four Airports Authority of India (AAI) airports: Varanasi, Pune, Kolkata, and Vijayawada, as well as three joint venture airports: Hyderabad, Bangalore, and New Delhi.

A press release from the Ministry of Civil Aviation stated, “The need for security is dynamic.”. The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), the regulatory authority for civil aviation security in the country, reviews security arrangements at airports from time to time and upgrades them accordingly.”

Tests of the Digi Yatra Biometric boarding system with registration for ‘Day of Travel’ have reached the completion stage, and the program will be launched soon.

According to the minister, passengers would have to provide all details related to their trip (passenger details, PNRs, and biometrics) via an app to the departure airport’s biometric boarding system in order to use Digi Yatra services.

Furthermore, if a passenger does not have the wish to use Digi Yatra services for a specific route, the passenger can opt-out of sending data and use the conventional manual process at the airport.
