Hyderabad: Four community halls to be built by GHMC

Hyderabad is seeing more infrastructure and amenities for its citizens than ever before, which is why it has been rated as one of the top cities to live in. Additionally to flyovers, link roads, and parks, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has decided to push forward its proposals to construct four community halls for economically weaker sections.

All of the three community halls are in the Khairatabad ward, while the fourth will be in Pochamma Basthi in the Somajiguda ward. Tenders have already been called to build these facilities in Indira Nagar’s 2-BHK Housing Colony, BJR Nagar and Khairatabad Market Road (near Delhi Ganesh Mandap).

A wide variety of uses is planned for these community halls. Libraries equipped with computers have been converted into some of the existing community halls. Recreational uses, indoor sports, and functions are performed using them in many areas. Furthermore, these buildings are also being used as polling booths, for various initiatives that the State government aims at helping the urban poor, and to hold health camps.

The elected officials and the residents of that area decide how to use the community hall. A GHMC official said that since all of these facilities are located in slums, they will be of great assistance to the poor.

As part of the GHMC’s construction program, a number of multipurpose function halls are being built across the city. As they are leased at cheaper rates compared to private banquet halls, these facilities are mostly utilized by the poor for marriages and other functions.

As an example, Kukatpally Housing Board Colony Phase 4 and Sitaphalmandi, Secunderabad have multipurpose halls that are used for a variety of purposes, such as weddings, that have become boons for people.

It is reported that halls operated by private companies provide similar amenities to multi-purpose function halls.
