Hyderabad: GHMC ready to take up desilting works ahead of monsoon

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is preparing to desilt nalas and stormwater drains in all its circles ahead of monsoon. Private agencies have been assigned by the GHMC to carry out these works. According to GHMC, more than 350 desilting projects were identified in 150 divisions of Greater Hyderabad in 2022.

It is estimated that the corporation spent around Rs 53 crore on these works this year, which were divided into 56 packages covering all 30 circles. The work was previously assigned to small contractors who did not perform the work properly. After the silt from the SW drains was removed, it was dumped on the roads and later, it entered the drains and nalas once again. Therefore, the GHMC will work with some agencies on these projects, said the officer.

There were 56 packages identified, including 29 works worth Rs 16.24 crore in the Charminar zone. Many of the small and medium SW drains and nalas in the GHMC Charminar zone are in Chandrayangutta circle. This zone is divided into 29 packages. GHMC officials at Charminar zone said all works would be completed before monsoon season.

The GHMC issued tenders for 56 packages, and the response from zones was positive. These zones have already been assigned works. The work is being done in accordance with the Comprehensive Road Maintenance Programme (CRMP), which entrusted private agencies with road repairs, maintenance, and recompetition of major roads.
