Hyderabad has adequate water supply regardless of population growth in future: KTR

Speaking at the Urban Progress Day event on Friday, Municipal Administration Minister KT Rama Rao stated that Hyderabad has an adequate water supply regardless of future population growth.

According to the Minister, even with a projected population double by 2050, Hyderabad is the only city with a sufficient water supply. Extensive preventive measures are being put in place to avoid future drinking water shortages. A tank project is currently underway to achieve this goal.

Dana Kishore, Managing Director of HMWSSB, said that Hyderabad currently has an abundant water supply, with plans in place to meet future demands. Previously, the city relied on the reservoirs of Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar for drinking water, but this is no longer necessary.

In 2014, the city supplied 307 MGD of drinking water, but this has now been increased to 560 MGD. The implementation of Godavari drinking water supply phase-1 and Krishna water supply since the establishment of GHMC has enabled the provision of ample water to both the city and the Outer Ring Road (ORR) area over three phases.

He also revealed that the government has assigned crores of rupees for the Sunkishala project’s construction. Furthermore, he stated that approximately 20 TMC (Thousand Million Cubic Feet) of drinking water has been assured from the Kondapochamma Sagar and Mallanna Sagar reservoirs to meet Hyderabad’s future water needs.

The Water Board also provides free drinking water for up to 20,000 litres per month to 62 percent of the population. So far, a total of Rs. 828 crores has been spent on this initiative. Furthermore, the city’s 31 newly constructed Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) will be operational soon, ensuring complete treatment of daily generated sewage water.
