Hyderabad: Hawala cash worth over Rs 10 crore seized in one month

The police have seized more than Rs 10.96 crore in the last month, suspected to be hawala cash. Several hawala operators were caught, but some sub-operators and a few others who carried the money were held by the police after they failed to account for it.

Unaccounted money worth Rs.1.24 crore was seized from a person at Humayunnagar by the Hyderabad police on September 29. It was claimed that he had received the money from Gujarathi Galli in Koti and was to transfer it to four people. On October 9, the police seized Rs. 2.49 crore unaccounted money and arrested three individuals. In response to a tip off, the police caught them and found the cash in a bag they had with them.

On October 11, police seized Rs. 3.5 crore cash from two cars at Himayatnagar based on information. According to reports, six people in the cars collected the money from Himayatnagar and were heading to Hayathnagar to hand it over to another individual.

In another case, on October 12, police seized Rs. 2 crores in unaccounted cash from four people suspected of being hawala money. According to the police, four people were waiting at Banjara Hills Road No. 12 with the cash when they were apprehended based on specific information. They allegedly received instructions from a contact in Gujarat to deliver the money to another person in Banjara Hills.

On October 21, police busted a hawala money racket at MJ bridge in Jumerat Bazar, arresting four people and seizing Rs.1.1 crore in unaccounted cash. Following a tip, the police apprehended the gang during a vehicle check, and when questioned, they were unable to provide satisfactory answers about the cash.

On October 23, police busted an alleged hawala racket and seized Rs. 63.50 lakh from five people. The police raided an electrical godown in Troop Bazaar, and those arrested admitted to being sub operators in a hawala business.
