Hyderabad: Hindu group calls for ‘Goshamahal Bandh’ after Raja Singh’s arrest

As part of their protest against the “illegal arrest and detention” of suspended BJP MLA T Raja Singh last week, the Sri Ram Yuva Sena called for a Goshamahal Bandh on Saturday.

Following communal disturbances over his derogatory remarks against Prophet Muhammad, the Hyderabad police invoked the Preventive Detention (PD) Act against the Goshamahal MLA. At the moment, Raja Singh is being held at the Central Prison Cherlapally.

Hindu-dominated areas include Dhoolpet, Siddiamber Bazaar, Shahinayathgunj, Mangalhat, Puranapul, Kulsumpura, and Jummerat Bazaar within the Goshamahal constituency. There is a large fan following for Raja Singh in the area. Muslim youth in the Old City protested against the MLA after he released his statement on August 22.

The Hyderabad police booked and arrested Raja Singh the next day. Due to a legal glitch, he managed to secure bail.

As a result of his release on bail, several protests were held on August 24, followed by police heavily cracking down on protesters.

As soon as Raja Singh was detained under the PD Act, he was sent notices pending in other cases.

According to the police, 101 cases have been filed against the MLA since 2004, of which 18 were related to communal incidents in the old city of Hyderabad. Protesters demanding Raja Singh’s release marched to Khairatabad Bada Ganesh on Wednesday.

His supporters called for a bandh in some districts of Telangana. Responses were mixed or nonexistent.

In a YouTube video posted on August 22, Raja Singh made derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad. Since then, it has been removed. As a retaliation, Raja Singh posted it in response to the Telangana government allowing Munawar Faruqui to perform in Hyderabad on August 20. Police prevented him from disrupting the show after he threatened to do so.

Raja Singh then took to YouTube and posted his own video making derogatory comments on Prophet Muhammad, which he called a “comedy.” Protests began the same day around midnight and lasted until August 23, when the BJP MLA was arrested. The situation deteriorated during the night as a large number of protestors remained on the roads.
