Hyderabad: IBS ragging accused moves High Court for anticipatory bail

On Wednesday, one of the accused in the IBS ragging case, who is a child in conflict with the law (CCL), moved the High Court for anticipatory bail.

After hearing the accused’s mother’s plea, Justice K Surender asked the Shankarpally police to present their argument regarding the case. The counsel representing the government was directed to accumulate instructions on the criminal petition.

Previously, the Shankarpally police arrested ten people for assaulting a student named Himank Bansal for making derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad. On the basis of Bansal’s complaint, the police charged the accused with sections 307 (attempt to murder), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 342 (wrongful confinement), 450 (trespass), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.

The mother of the child in conflict with the law requested protection for the accused in case he is arrested. On Monday, Cyberabad police arrested eight students in connection with the ICFAI University student assault case. The police also took action against nine members of the college administration due to negligence.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) took suo motu notice of the ragging incident reported on the IBS college campus and issued a notice to the Telangana government, Union Education Ministry, and UGC, directing the chief secretary to file a report on the matter within six weeks.

The NHRC stated on Tuesday that the college administration failed to assist the student when he approached them with a complaint on November 1. IT stated that the incident was a violation of human rights, caused by the college administration’s negligence, lack of supervision, and failure to ensure the safety and security of all students on campus.

According to the commission, the chief secretary’s report should include an action-taken report, as well as the reasons for the institution’s prima facie failure to take adequate steps to prevent ragging in accordance with the UGC regulation.

The NHRC also informed the Telangana Director General of Police about the status of the criminal case.
