Hyderabad is seeing a spike in social media browsing late at night

Most Hyderabadis prefer to go to bed early and rise early, even though the city also has the highest share of late-night social media users, reveals a study. The Great Indian Sleep Scorecard for 2022 by Wakefit.co shows that Hyderabad’s numbers reveal a more mixed picture of people’s sleep habits.

The good news is that Hyderabad has the highest percentage of early risers (15%) compared to other metro cities, but at the same time it has the highest rate of late-night social media browsing (41%). People seem to be suffering from this lifestyle, as 49 percent reported feeling sleepy during work hours.

Approximately 87 per cent of respondents reported using their phones just before going to bed, so it appears that phones are the priority for most people. There is also an increase of 32 per cent in respondents who fear they suffer from insomnia.

Over the past year, there has been an increase of 45 per cent in the number of people going to bed before 10 pm in the city. It is surprising that 67 per cent of people say they wake up feeling refreshed despite using phones before bedtime.

The top sleep deterrents for Hyderabadis are social media, late-night work culture, and the pandemic with a 16 per cent rise in the number of respondents staying up until late browsing social media as compared to last year.

The study revealed that social media was not the only factor that disrupted sleep as 28 per cent of individuals stayed up late worrying about their post-pandemic future.

In addition, 40 per cent of respondents reported staying up late to do their work, and IT professionals appear to suffer most from this unbalanced work-sleep cycle as compared to other professionals, as 53 per cent of respondents came from IT.
