Hyderabad is the Best State Capital in Swachh Survekshan

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation tops in the ‘Best State Capital in Solid Waste Management’ award in the entire country.

The Government of India Dept of MoHUA India Swachh Bharat Gov has announced that Greater Hyderabad (GHMC) is the Best State Capital in ‘Solid Waste Management’ in Swachh Survekshan 2018.
GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy, Mayor Bonthu Rammohan and other senior officials celebrated the occasion by cutting a cake in the head office.

“Hyderabad has been bagging the award for the most livable city for the last three years. Emphasis has been on provision of basic amenities besides upkeep of sanitation. The city has been setting a example for other cities across the country with its innovative programmes,” the Mayor said, adding that the GHMC would continue to keep up the good show next year as well.

However, it was not a cake walk for the municipal corporation. Earlier this year, after the Swachh Bharat Mission declared Hyderabad as Open Defecation Free city, GHMC prepared a 60-day action plan in March to improve its performance in the SwacchSurvekshan ranking this year.

As part of this initiative, several progammes such as rangoli competitions for women, awareness programmes in schools, educational institutes and residential welfare associations were conducted. Over 2,200 Swachh Dhoots were deployed to promote segregation of dry and wet waste at source.

Introduction of 2,500 Swachh Autos helped the municipal corporation increase the garbage collection from 3,500 metric tonnes to 4,500 metric tonnes a day.

Last year, Hyderabad was ranked best among the Metro cities in the country and the GHMC was committed to improve its performance this year. Right from Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao, all senior officials appealed to citizens to actively participate in the Swachh Survekshan rankings.
