Hyderabad: Khairatabad Ganesh Organizers Opt for Clay Idol This Year

On Friday, the Khairatabad Ganesh Utsav Committee disclosed the details of this year’s Khairatabad Ganesh, one of Hyderabad’s most popular Ganesh idols and said the height of the idol will be 50 feet.

It was also announced that the idol would be made from clay and organic colours this year, named Panchamukha Maha Lakshmi Ganapathy.

“We are installing an idol for the first time made of clay of such a massive height instead of a PoP idol. We made a clay idol in 2020 as well, but it was only 9 feet tall. This time around it will be more challenging. The work will be finished in about three months,” said Chinna Swamy Rajendran, who has been designing and building Khairatabad idols since 1978.

Due to the Telangana High Court’s ban on immersion of Ganesh idols made of PoP in Hussainsagar last year, the Ganesh idol this year will be made of clay, as per the announcement made by the Utsav Committee Sudarshan last year.

For Vinayaka Chaturthi celebrations last year, the Supreme Court allowed the immersion of Ganesha idols in the Hussainsagar lake one last time.

An estimated 50 skilled artisans from Mumbai, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh will work on the idol, which has for many years been the tallest Ganesh idol in the city.

From August 31, the festivities will begin, and the idol will be immersed on September 9.

The Karra puja was performed on Friday, marking the beginning of the process of making the idol. During the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, the idol was 9 feet tall, but last year’s idol was 40 feet. In 2019, the idol stood at 61 feet tall.

Thousands of devotees visit the idol every year. Khairatabad Ganesh originated in 1954 with a one-foot idol.
