Hyderabad: No jail time, only fine for intoxicated drivers caught for the first time

As per the latest reports, drivers caught under the influence of alcohol for the first time will not be jailed instead they will only be fined.

In the wake of the long-pending drunk and drive cases, the city police department is undertaking steps to penalise motorists who were caught for the first time in drinking and driving.

The police department has decided to address the pending drunk driving cases in the mega Lok Adalat on March 12. The Telangana Legal Services Authority (TLSA) has sent a proposal outlining the pending cases in the city’s various courts. As a result of the proposal’s approval, all pending cases will be heard in the Lok Adalat, and those who were caught driving intoxicated for the first time will be fined Rs.2,000 with no jail time.

Previously, the court used to penalise drunk drivers with Rs 10,000 in fines and jail time varying from days to months based on the amount of alcohol found in their blood. According to reports, over 1.5 lakh drunk driving cases were pending in 2016, with 1 lakh persons being caught for the first time. Meanwhile, a fine of almost Rs 2,300 crore has been collected for them since 2016. However, because the annual payments did not exceed 30-40%, the decision was made to solve the issues. Measures have been put in place to waive off the fine if half of it is paid.

Telangana tops in drink and driving cases in 2020

Telangana had risen to the top of the charts in drunken driving (DD) cases. According to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) statistics for 2020, the state had 1,328 DD instances in 2020. Worse, it ranked second in India in terms of DD-related deaths, behind only Uttar Pradesh.
