Hyderabad: Police bust cricket betting racket, Rs 20 lakh cash seized

Two people were arrested by the Rachakonda Special Operations Team and the Saroornagar police on Wednesday after an online cricket betting racket was busted during the T20 Asia Cup match between India and Sri Lanka. Material worth Rs.20.5 lakh was seized by officials.

T.Ashok, a bookie from Saroornagar, and M.Kishore, a punter from Yacharam, were arrested. There are two absconding suspects, Mohd Khader and G Subba Rao.

Police report that the suspects arranged telephonic lines and provided punters with line numbers. Betting begins after the first ball of the first over and continues until the last ball, and it fluctuates based on the match’s situation.

The punters place their bets while the match is on by calling bookies.

In addition to noting down the details of the betting and punter, the bookies will automatically record the conversation as well. An official noted that after the match, bookies inform their collection agents how much money must be collected from punters and how much must be given to them.

Upon receiving a tip-off, the police raided Bhagath Singh Nagar, in Saroornagar, and arrested the suspects.

In similar news, the south zone commissioner’s task force, in collaboration with Chatrinaka police, apprehended four people who were running a cricket betting racket. They also recovered Rs 181,000 and four cell phones from the arrested people.

Vijay Raj (39), A. Bharath (28), K Hemanth (30), and A Raju (40) were arrested. Ali, another accused, was discovered to be the main bookie. As of Saturday, he was still at large because he is based in Maharashtra.

During the lockdown, the main accused, Vijay Raj, developed an addiction to cricket betting and met a man named Ali from Maharashtra. Ali facilitated cricket betting by offering applications.
