Hyderabad: Police release 2 men detained for raising ‘Jai Shree Ram’ slogan at Makkah Masjid

The Hyderabad police detained two men from Maharashtra for allegedly raising ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogans inside the Makka Masjid. Following the detention, the police reported that the slogan was carried by their ringtone.

On April 27, three men identified as Anmol, Vishal, and Venkat arrived as tourists at the Makkah Masjid. The Masjid authorities allegedly called the police after hearing ‘Jai Shree Ram’ slogans from within the Masjid.

The police from nearby police station Hussaini Alam arrived on the scene and identified two men as the culprits, one of whom was absconding. The police detained them after they were identified.

However, during the interrogation, the police discovered that the men did not raise any slogans, but that the slogans were carried by the ringtones on their phones.

The police also said that the Masjid authorities misinterpreted the ringtone as a slogan and filed the complaint as a result.

It should be noted, however, that in a busy and noisy area near Makkah Masjid, a ringtone is unlikely to be as loud as someone yelling slogans.

Nevertheless, a source from the police in the Old City confirmed that a slogan was raised, which is why the boys were detained.

Given that the incident occurred a day before Friday (when hundreds of Muslims gather for afternoon prayers), cops are on high alert in the area.

The Makkah Masjid in Hyderabad is a Golconda-period mosque from the 17th century. Sultan Mohd Qutb Shah, the fifth monarch of the Qutb Shahi (or Golconda) dynasty (which also founded and built Hyderabad in 1591), initiated its construction.

Sultan Mohd Qutb Shah was the nephew of Mohd Quli Qutb Shah, the founder of Hyderabad. The former decided to build the mosque for those who could not travel to Mecca for pilgrimage. Legend has it that he brought a brick from the Kaaba to be used in the foundation of the Makkah Masjid in 1616, when construction began.
