Hyderabad sees a dip in air quality as PM 2.5 levels rise

According to reports released by the Telangana State Pollution Control Board on Thursday, Hyderabad has seen a dip in its air quality. There was a significant increase in both PM 2.5 and PM 10.

On Diwali day in Hyderabad, PM 2.5 levels increased from 34 to 105 micrograms per cubic meter, the report revealed. The PM 10 level rose from 78 to 138 micrograms per cubic meter.

As a result of the pandemic and muted celebrations last year, the level of air quality was much less in comparison to the current year.

In Hyderabad, the air quality has reached pre-pandemic levels this year.

Sulphur dioxide concentrations increased from 5.8 micrograms per cubic meter in 2021 to 13.1 micrograms per cubic meter in 2022. However, the level of nitrogen oxides decreased.

The Hyderabad Air Quality Index (AQI) today reached 115, placing it in the ‘poor’ category. The worst AQI was witnessed at Somajiguda (165). Zoo Park has the second-worst index (162).

Meanwhile, AQI levels in Vittal Rao Nagar, Manikonda, New Malakpet, Puppalguda, Shirdi Sai Nagar, and Vittal Rao Nagar were reported to be ‘moderate.’

Hyderabad’s major air pollutants

PM2.5, PM10, SO2, CO, Ozone, and NO2 are the major air pollutants in the city, with levels of 44, 76, 2, 1159, 6, and 12 respectively.

The pollution level in the city is 2.9 times higher than the WHO recommended limit.

Higher levels of air pollution are linked to an increase in cardiovascular and respiratory illnesses, as well as an increase in the frequency and severity of Covid-19 infections.

According to a recent study, Hyderabad is the fourth most polluted city in the country after Delhi, Kolkata, and Mumbai, and is the most polluted megacity in the southern part of the country, according to data on the IQAir website on October 21.
