Hyderabad sees a rise in cases of drunk drivers attacking cops

Instances of drunk drivers attacking traffic cops during drink-driving checks in the city are on the rise in the city. Since the beginning of 2022, police have filed 14 such cases against 27 people, including a woman, for assaulting or abusing traffic officers.

The Banjara Hills traffic police were targeted three times, while the Trimulgherry traffic cops were targeted twice. Falaknuma, Goshamahal, Marredpally, Saifabad, Begumpet, Mirchowk, and Narayanguda, personnel were each attacked or abused once.

The traffic police conduct drink-driving checks at any time of day or night, based on the analysis of road accidents or rash driving cases by inebriated drivers on any given stretch of road.

On August 14, three people on a bike were stopped in Trimulgherry but attempted to flee by riding in the opposite direction. When Trimulgherry Sub-inspector S Pentaiah and his team attempted to stop them, they drove recklessly and nearly collided with them. “By pure luck, we escaped unscathed,” Pentaiah explained.

In a few cases, traffic officers were also targeted by drunk drivers’ accomplices. On March 30, while the Banjara Hills traffic police were checking Road No. 2, a group of five people threatened the team led by SI Ch Upendar. Officials said that they threatened them, claiming to know political leaders, and prevented personnel from carrying out their duties.

In yet another case in May, Akash Sajani assaulted and damaged the phone of traffic home guard D Ravinder of the Marredpally traffic police station. He caused a commotion by refusing to take the breathalyzer test.  Sajani attacked the home guard and damaged his phone while he was filming the incident with his phone, according to the police.

There have also been reports of women joining their husbands or friends in attacking traffic cops. In February, a medical practitioner from Karkhana and a woman in a car got into an argument with the traffic police at NTR Garden. They were both drunk and they refused to cooperate with the police and misbehaved with the cops, said Saifabad police.
