Hyderabad: Shia Companions Requested Forest Dept for elephant Rajni during Muharram

State Forest Department has been requested by Shia Companions to grant elephant Rajni for the Muharram procession next month in Hyderabad

It is an age-old custom for the custodians to carry the Bibi-ka-Alam by an elephant on the Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram, according to Shia Companions General Secretary Syed Ali Jaffry.

Officials discussed the idea of issuing a GO to provide an elephant for the Muharram procession recently at a meeting. During Bonalu and Muharram processions, Rajni, the captive elephant at the Nizam Trust’s Nehru Zoo, is regularly taken.

In Hyderabad, elephants were used for the first time during the Nizam period (1724-1948), under Mahbub Ali Pasha, its sixth ruler.
Nizam VII Mir Osman Ali Khan provided an elephant named ‘Fatha e Nishan’ to carry the Muharram standard until its death in 1986.
In 1996, Ali Raza Hashim Mosvi also gifted an elephant for the purpose. It was named ‘Hashmi’ for the procession and died in 2004.

Grant requested for Ashoorkhana renovations

As Muharram is set to begin by the end of July, a special grant is being sought for the renovation and repair of Ashoorkhanas.
Shia Companions, a voluntary organization, urged Telangana minister for minority welfare Koppula Eshwar to release Rs. 5 crores for the repair and renovation of Ashoorkhanas in Hyderabad and other districts.

The government was also appreciated for its support of various festivals, such as Bonalu, Bathukamma, and Ganesh Nimajjanam.

The Muharram procession will take place in Hyderabad on August 8 and 9, 2022. The home minister Mahmood Ali and Koppula Eshwar directed officials to make the necessary arrangements on Saturday.

In order to prevent issues related to peace and security, traffic jams, shortages of drinking water, and interruptions of electricity supply, officials were instructed to take the necessary precautions.
