Hyderabad: Student protests against fee demand with petrol; causes accidental fire

On Friday, an accidental fire in Hyderabad was caused by a student leader’s threat to a junior college principal demanding a Transfer Certificate (TC) for a student.

Around 12.30 p.m. on Friday, a student leader, the principal, and another college employee were injured in an incident at Narayana College in Amberpet, near Ramanthapur, Hyderabad.

P Srinivas Reddy, East Zone Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, told the media that the student union leader, Sandeep, had gone to the college to speak with the principal, Sudhakar Reddy, on behalf of a student named Sai Narayana, who had applied for a TC.

As the principal declined to issue the TC until the student paid his fees, Sandeep threatened to pour petrol on himself and the principal, according to the police officer.

In addition, there was a lamp on the table in the principal’s office that caught fire due to the petrol. Sandeep, the principal Sudhakar, and Administrative Officer Ashok Reddy were all burned as a result of this.

They were transferred to Gandhi Hospital for treatment. They are all stable and did not sustain any serious injuries, said the Addl DCP. Sai Narayana, the student, reportedly completed his intermediate in MPC (Maths, Physics, Chemistry) in June of this year.

Sai Narayana’s family members claimed that the college administration was harassing him by failing to issue the TC. The student owed the college Rs 16,000 in fee arrears, and the principal insisted that he first clear the fees.

Sai Narayana had just completed his intermediate second year and applied for TC. According to police, he went to the college with several others on Friday to demand his TC. The Addl DCP added that Sandeep, who was a member of this group, had decided to carry a bottle of petrol in his pocket to make the demand.

An eyewitness, one of several other parents who had gone to the college to speak with the principal regarding pending fee payments, stated to the media that there were about 20 people in the room at the time the incident occurred. According to reports, the fire damaged an air conditioner and other objects in the principal’s room. The injured were taken to the Gandhi Hospital,  According to police, their condition is stable.
