Hyderabad: Supermarket fined Rs. 20,000 for dead bee found inside jam bottle

According to the latest reports, a supermarket chain was fined 20,000 rupees after a customer found a dead bee inside a jam bottle.

As a result of a seven-year court battle, Heritage Foods Ltd also was ordered to pay Rs 3,000 in legal costs to the aggrieved customer.

The consumer panel verdict came in response to the company’s appeal against the Ranga Reddy district commission order ordering it to compensate customer D Jaipal Reddy and provide five Heritage jam bottles.

Although it dismissed Heritage’s appeal, the state commission overturned the district panel’s decision to award five jam bottles. In October 2014, the customer purchased two jam bottles at its Karmanghat store under the ‘buy one, get one’ offer. A bee was found in one of the bottles.

Heritage denied the complaint after initially accepting it, according to the complainant. The customer was charged with planting the foreign object inside the bottle by Heritage stores. During the hearing, Justice MSK Jaiswal and member Meena Ramanathan said no customer would capture a bee to plant in a bottle.

Charges on carry bags result in fine for D Mart

Narasimha Murthy, a Hyderabad resident, lodged a complaint against supermarket chain D-Mart, alleging that he was charged Rs.3.50 for the logo-printed carry bag after making a Rs.479 purchase at the Hyderguda branch in December 2019.

The Hyderabad Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission (CRDC) fined the D-Mart outlet in the city for charging the consumer for a carry bag. The commission ordered the retail chain to pay the consumer Rs 10,000 in compensation and return the Rs 3.50 it had taken from him.

The compliance period is 45 days, and if the business fails to pay it, it will be subject to an 18% interest charge.
