Hyderabad to soon get electric double-decker buses on its roads

Telangana State Road Transportation (TSRTC) has purchased 10 electric double-decker buses that will be used on routes like Patancheru-Koti, Jeedimetla-CBS, and Afzalgunj-Mehdipatnam.

A senior official was quoted as saying, “No traffic jam would happen by running these double-decker buses through these routes.”

Sources have reported that initially 10 electric double-decker buses would be purchased and they would be limited to three routes. In the future, more buses would be added.

“The electric buses would be acquired via tender on rent; a company that wins the bid would get into an agreement with Telangana State Road Transportation. The fares and routes would be decided by TSRTC,” said a senior official.

Commuters from the 1990s still recall riding in double-decker buses. For a long time, there has been a call to reintroduce double-decker buses on the roads of Hyderabad. On Twitter, citizens continue to urge IT and Industries Minister KT Rama Rao to reintroduce double-decker buses in the city.

In Mumbai, electric double-decker buses are already on the road. In India’s financial capital, Switch Mobility operates 22 model buses for public transportation. According to sources, these buses were designed and manufactured in India and have been well received by commuters.

Officials from the RTC have already conducted research into which routes the e-double-decker buses should take. The buses will most likely travel on routes without flyovers. There are currently three routes that have been finalized.

KTR previously suggested that the government reintroduce double-decker buses in Hyderabad and directed Transport Minister P Ajay Kumar to look into the matter.

The TSRTC had also planned to introduce these buses at the time, and tenders were also called for the purchase of regular double-decker buses. The contract had been given to a well-known company. However, due to the financial commitment involved in purchasing new buses, the RTC decided to hire them instead.
