Hyderabad Traffic Police Face Allegations of Violence in Parking Dispute: Calls for Investigation and Addressing Parking Issues

An incident involving alleged violence by city traffic police officials against cab drivers over a parking issue was reported in Hyderabad on Friday evening. The incident occurred near the Mindspace neighbourhood and rekindled debate about police violence and the city’s scarcity of parking places.

The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) posted a video on social media depicting a verbal altercation between one of the cab drivers, Bharat Kumar, and the traffic cops. The TGPWU demanded an investigation into the incident.

When Bharat Kumar and another cab driver, Naresh, questioned the policeman’s behaviour, the constable resorted to assault, according to Bharat Kumar, who is also the admin of Amma Samstha, a collective of drivers. According to Bharat, the officer took Naresh’s car keys when he parked his cab on the side of the road while waiting for a customer.

In the video, Bharat expresses his displeasure with the police’s use of force. It also shows the cops attempting to prevent the drivers from filming the events.
Following the encounter, Naresh was taken to the Madhapur Police Station and detained, according to Bharat. Later that evening, he was released after the union president of Amma Samstha, Vinay Bhushan, and approximately 150 drivers attended the Commissioner of Police and the ACP office.

In reaction to the public outrage over the video, Cyberabad Traffic Police’s Twitter account indicated that a concerned officer would look into the incident.

Head Constable Ramaiah of the Madhapur Police Station reported that the incident originated from a heated verbal altercation and that both sides had reached a resolution. He confirmed that no charges had been filed.

The incident has brought to light the issue of police misconduct as well as the necessity for a solution to the parking problems that drivers in Hyderabad face.
