In a phased manner, farm loans will be cleared: Niranjan Reddy

Agriculture Minister S Niranjan Reddy informed the Assembly on Sunday that the crop loan waiver scheme had waived Rs 16,144.10 crore for 35,31,913 eligible farmers.

Responding to a question from Congress members Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and D Sridhar Babu during Question Hour, Niranjan Reddy stated that all eligible farmers were covered under the crop loan waiver scheme in 2014, while the government waived farm loans up to Rs.25,000 under the 2018 scheme. He stated that farm loans up to Rs.50,000 were being cleared in a phased manner.

The Minister added that Rs 6,280 crore was allocated for the loan waiver in the budget for 2023-24 fiscal. He stated that loan amounts ranging from Rs.36,000 to Rs.90,000 would be waived during the forthcoming fiscal.

Congress member Podem Veeraiah said that while the Agriculture Department was allocated Rs.26,830 crore in the Budget, the majority of it went to Rythu Bandhu and Rythu Bima schemes, with only Rs 6,280 crore allocated for loan waiver, which was insufficient to clear the loans. He claimed that the BRS government had promised to waive loan amounts up to Rs.1 lakh but had now reduced it to Rs 90,000.
