India Ranks Highest In Vaccination Drive In South East Asia Region; WHO

With the vaccination campaigns running across the country, more than half a billion doses of Covid 19 vaccines have been administered in the South East Asia Region. The World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Friday, India has been at the top of the vaccination drive in the region.

Countries Are Making Efforts To Have Higher Vaccination Coverage; WHO

As per the latest reports, Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, Regional Director, WHO South East Asia Region released a statement on Friday. She said that India has so far administered the highest amount of vaccine doses; 489 millions in the region.

Singh added that the countries in the region are also making consistent efforts to rapidly to expand the coverage amidst the recurrent surge in the Covid 19 cases. At the same time, WHO aims to achieve at least 10 percent of the population to be fully vaccinated by September end this year. And around 40 percent by the end of 2021 and another 70 percent by mid-2022.

WHO Chief Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, in late May called for a global support to vaccinate at least 10 percent of the population by the end of September.

Singh in the statement also said that the countries are making efforts to reach more people to save their lives with the Covid 19 vaccines. They have shown their commitment towards curbing the pandemic at the earliest.

Nearly 90 Percent Of The Vaccines Have Been Administered In The Region

Reports suggest that as of Friday, a total of 618.5 million doses have been administered in the region. And around 146 million people are fully vaccinated.

Indonesia was the first region to start the vaccination drive and has administered nearly 71 million doses. Recently, Sri Lanka has administered 13 million doses and has maintained a record of innoculating 5,00,000 people per day.

Nearly 90 per cent of all vaccine doses available in the region have been utilised, said Singh.
