Inequitable Implementation: Owaisi Criticizes Meat Ban During Kanwar Yatra

Asaduddin Owaisi, the leader of AIMIM and a member of parliament from Hyderabad, criticised the BJP-led government of Uttar Pradesh for prohibiting the sale of meat on roads set aside for the Kanwar Yatra.

Owaisi drew attention to the inequitable implementation of legislation based on religious beliefs by drawing a contrast between the treatment of Muslims performing Namaz on public highways and the prohibition on meat markets during the yatra. He referred to it as a “shameful thing” to deny people work opportunities because of religious beliefs. Owaisi cast doubt on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s assertion of “equal citizenship,” implying duplicity in the way various religious communities are treated.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had announced the ban on the open sale of meat along the Kanwar Yatra routes, citing the need to respect the beliefs of devotees and maintain cleanliness on the route.

Owaisi’s criticism comes after FIRs were registered against Muslims offering Namaz on the streets during Eid-ul-Adha and Eid-ul-Fitr in Kanpur, going against government directives. These incidents raise concerns about the differential treatment of religious practices and the protection of equal rights for all citizens.
