Institute asked us to avoid wearing burqa: Tweets Hyderabad student

As per the latest reports, a student from Hyderabad has tweeted that the management of Sweekaar Academy of Rehabilitation Sciences (SARS) has asked Muslim girl students to avoid wearing a burqa.

In what appears to be an aftereffect of Karnataka’s hijab controversy, the management of Sweekaar Academy of Rehabilitation Sciences (SARS) allegedly asked Muslim girl students to follow a strict dress code and refrain from wearing burqas.

The controversy erupted after a complaint was made on Twitter by a first-year student who identified herself as Fatima. On Wednesday, February 9th, the student, who is reportedly pursuing a Bachelor of Education in Special Education at SARS, took to the microblogging website to claim that the chairman was targeting students based on their religion by not allowing them to wear a burqa.

“It is surprising that it’s happening in Hyderabad. We need justice #Telangana,” she said. In another tweet, she claimed that the girls were told to ‘tick’ the dress code checklist before joining the college.

She went on to say that the girls who wore burqas were compared to female scavengers.

She also said: Not only that, he has compared Muslim girls to ‘mehtrani’ (toilet cleaners) because we wore headscarves & masks. He also said no one can target him. We do not feel safe in this college. Help us!

Later the chairman of Sweekaar Academy of Rehabilitation Sciences (SARS) Hanumantha Rao had apologised according to the series tweeted by Fatima.

As a result of the ongoing controversy in Karnataka where Muslim students wearing hijab have been refused entry into the college, the issue has spiralled out of control into a major controversy. Hindu students demanding ‘uniformity’ have threatened to wear saffron scarves if Muslim students continue to wear hijab in educational institutions. As the violence and agitation erupted in several Karnataka colleges, the government had shut down high schools and colleges for three days.
