Interfaith Couple Gets Allahabad Court’s Protection Against Family

The Allahabad High Court has recently observed that adults have the right to choose their life partner, irrespective of their religion.

Court Grants Protection To Interfaith Couple

The court’s judgement comes on Thursday after granting protection to an interfaith couple from Gorakhpur. The court said that in such a case even the parents of the couple cannot object to the relationship.

The petition was filed by Shifa Hasan and her Hindu partner which is a division bench comprising justice Manoj Kumar Gupta and Justice Deepak Verma said that the two adults have the right to choose their matrimonial partner. And that cannot be denied irrespective of their religion.

The court added in the judgement that the petition presented to them is joint one and the two individuals claim that they are in love with each other and are major (above 18). Following this, in their (court’s) opinion, even the parents cannot object to their relationship.

Court Directs The Police Authorities To Safeguard The Petitioners

In the petition, the petitioner’s contention was that they are in love with each other and are living together on their own choice. However, some of their family members have not accepted them and are disturbing their living.

Following the petition, the court had directed the police authorities to ensure that the petitioners are not being harassed by the father of the girl or by any other person regarding their relationship.

During the course of hearing, the petitioner, Shifa Hasan submitted before the court that she has also filed for conversion from Muslim to Hindu religion. On the said application, the district magistrate had called for a report from the police station.

The report said that the boy’s father was not agreeable to the marriage. However, his mother was ready for the same. Both the parents Hasan have opposed to the marriage. The court noted that the couple is of the age 19 and 24 years.
