International Tsunami Workshop in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: A special 5-day international-level workshop on Tsunami Warning Centre Operations and SOPs for ‘Tsunami Warning and Emergency Response’ will be inaugurated on Tuesday.

The workshop, integrated session has four components that included training of officials for tsunami emergency maps, plans , procedure, meetings of core teams that handle tsunami warning activities, was inaugurated by Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Govt. of India, Dr. Madhavan Rajeevan, the Head of the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning Centre Operations and Standard Operating.

This workshop is the highlight of a set of integrated meetings related to tsunami warning and mitigation being hosted at the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services, Hyderabad since 26th June. Over 80 officials from 18 Countries (Australia, Bangladesh, Comoros, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Myanmar, Oman, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand, United Kingdom and Yemen) are participating in these meetings which are organised by the Secretariat for the ICG/IOTWMS based in Perth, Australia in association with the Indian Ocean Tsunami Information Centre based in Jakarta, Indonesia. Besides this workshop, other components of these meetings included training of officials for tsunami emergency maps, plans, procedure, meetings of core teams that handle tsunami warning activities etc.

This spate of meetings is a comprehensive preparation for the Indian Ocean Wave Exercise 2018 scheduled for 4 – 5 September 2018 in which several countries including India will test tsunami preparedness in real time.
