Jubilee Hills rape case: Hyderabad police seek speedy trial of accused

As per the latest reports, the police are seeking a speedy trial of the accused one day after the Juvenile Justice Court allowed four of the five minors in Conflict with Law (CCL) to be tried as adults in the Jubilee Hills rape case.

On September 30, the Juvenile Justice Board permitted the minor accused to be tried as adults. Invoking Section 18 (3) of the Juvenile Justice Act, it then transferred their case record to the court of XII additional metropolitan sessions judge, Nampally (Children’s Court).

The accused will be examined as part of the process, after which they will be informed of the charges against them.

“After notifying them that they have been charged under specific sections of the law, the court will ask the CCL how they wish to plead. If the CCL plead not guilty, then a schedule for the trial will be issued. To begin with, statements of the listed witnesses will be recorded,” public prosecutor K Pratap Reddy was quoted as saying.

According to Jubilee Hills police, the four accused could approach the sessions court to challenge the Juvenile Justice Board’s order under Section 101 (2) of the JJ Act. They also stated that a memo would be filed with the sessions court in order to expedite the trial of the four CCL.

It should be noted that on May 28 of this year, the accused sexually assaulted a minor girl. The minor girl was sexually assaulted in an SUV after the accused promised to drive her home after attending a pub party.

All five juveniles were granted bail in the latter week of July. Telangana police decided to petition the Juvenile Justice Board to treat the five CCLs as adults during the trial so that their punishment would be as severe as possible.
